Art and Words

I occassionally write, too.

“The intersection in that piece is loaded to the brim with memories from a very adventurous time of my life, full of growth, change, new friendships and new marriage. While many people probably don't take note, I've always been visually obsessed with road signs, overpasses, stop lights, light and shadow. So, clearly nostalgia was the major draw to this painting.  That being said, I've seen plenty of other nostalgic artwork that I've never given a second thought about. It was the way you captured the light, a moment, a little square of time that compelled me to buy "One Way”. You have a great painting style but the way you compose your paintings is what really draws me in.”

Hot Time, Summer in the City...

Oh my goodness! It is so hot outside. And I am one that LOVES the summertime. I love being outside in bare feet and tank tops - whether that's a great fashion decision or not for me I really don't care. I love it. But right now - oh wow - it's too hot. It's the dangerous kind of hot. This afternoon we caught a short break on the back porch with the thunder rolling in the background and a hurricane-type breeze blowing cooling us off. You know the one I'm talking about, right? It's the one when the skies start getting dark, and the winds start up just at the first bands are coming in and you think it's probably the only good part of a hurricane. But, at the end of July you take what you can get. No, there's no hurricane out there right now so we can just relax (at least until August).

You know I love painting outside but right now, only the crazy ones are going out there. You know who you are. I'm too hot to be crazy. So, I'm staying indoors for now. I've got a few portraits I've been working on and new portrait commissions I'm getting ready to start so this is a great excuse for me to stay in the studio.

I had started a portrait of my father back in late spring and it's finally finished - well, except for those little bits that you go back to once you've let it sit for a month or two - if you decide to let it sit. I brought it over to my parents last weekend and I think it's a keeper. Well, I THINK it's a keeper. It's hard to tell with my daddy. I've been wanting to paint my daddy for awhile now. I took several photos of him and settled on this one. Mama has already decided on a spot in the living room for it. But, please note, it will NOT be the center of attention. Mama said we don't want him to get an inflated ego or something like that! Hah!

I also started a couple of smaller portraits on the back porch while up at the lake and those are percolating right now. I started a new one last week and will start another larger one this week. Looks like I'll be in the studio for a bit longer. Thank goodness.

Well, I've updated my calendar for the rest of the year and it looks like it's going to be a fun and busy five months to Christmas. I've updated my website with all the upcoming art shows, markets, and other events with the dates and locations where you'll be able to find me when I'm not painting in the studio.

Without the artist - without the creatives in this world -  there is no art. But we don't create art just for ourselves, we create it for everyone - we create it for you.

Much love, my peeps!

Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset, Repeat - Luke Bryan, I agree

I just got back from an almost 4-week run away from home trip. It's the first time I've ever done that. I remembered who I was and am - for that matter - on this trip. I felt like I could breathe again and hear my own voice once more. My original idea was to escape to my sister's place at the lake and just paint. Then we thought "hey, let's invite the oldest sister along". And, of course, she thought that was a great idea. Then she took it a step further and said "hey, why don't we go hiking?" We all thought that, too, was a great idea. And so we all made it happen. So, in that trip we had 3 travel days, 4 days of hiking, 7 days of full family at the lake, and only one week of actual painting time. I had a lot of breathing time, exercise time, writing about art, brainstorming about art, and discovering gouache paint. I created 4 small gouache paintings for my sister's lake house and started 2 - 9"x12" portraits.

I never realized until this trip that in order to become more clear headed about what I'm doing, it's necessary to get completely away from where I am  and what I am doing and how I am living day to day. I know that to say this is one thing and to have the ability to do this is something else altogether. And, until now, I just haven't had to ability to do it.

We hiked on the Appalachain Trail two separate days. One hike was 12 miles and the second one was 14+ miles. We hiked in Pisgah National Park up to Looking Glass and back - amazing views up there. And we hiked another trail that was difficult in elevation, lacked trail markings, and included humidity, and an abundance of gnats that decided my sweaty face was the perfect target for their little bodies. But, we did it and made it through together. I learned that my mind and body are at peace in these hills and on these trails.
The lake was where I painted and wrote and brainstormed. But I also tried to learn to ski (failed beautifully), saw beautiful sunsets on the lake, enjoyed an amazing fireworks show, participated in - and lost - a corn hole competition, was a part of the 4th of July boat parade (big water guns are fun - we need more for next year), laughed a lot and got a little pissed off with my family ("you're not the boss of me"), and just floated and chatted and laughed some more. And napped. Let's not overlook the importance of that.

I know, I know, this blog isn't really about art. But, in a way, it is. I needed this. I needed to recharge. I need to plunge into something where all my focus was on one task - the hike and rest. That has made a great difference for me indeed. My mind is clearer. And I will go back to my studio feeling refreshed. And grateful. So grateful.
